Chaplin received 3 Academy Awards during his career. He received one for Best Original Score and two honorary awards. Ironically during his active filmmaking years he expressed disdain for the Academy Awards.
He got his first Academy Award at the very first ceremony. His film The Circus was favorite to be widely recognized. Instead, the Academy withdrew the film from all categories and instead gave him his first honorary award. After, Chaplin's son said that his father was very unhappy with the Academy. Chaplin angered them by allegedly using that first Oscar as a doorstop.
His dislike for the Academy Awards helps to explain why two of Chaplin's greatest films were never nominated for Academy Awards, as the Academy pays attention to those kinds of attitudes. However, at the 44th Annual Academy Awards in 1972, Chaplin received his first honorary award after his exile. Chaplin received the longest standing ovation in the history of the Academy Awards. It lasted a full 12 minutes.
