★ The Coldest Inhabited Place On Earth - Oymyokan, Russia ★

Oymyakon is a small 800 person village located in the north-eastern Russian Republic of Sakha. Oymyakon boasts an average winter temperature of -49 ºF, with a one-time world record low of -96.16 ºF.

Oymyakon means "non-freezing water", situated as it is to a nearby hot spring at a toasty 32 ºF.

There is no mobile coverage in Oymyakon and even if it did, it would be unusable as most electronics stop working in freezing temperatures.

It is tough in Oymyakon pen ink freezes, batteries lose power fast, metal sticks to skin, cars cannot be started without lighting a bonfire beneath the fuel tank. Axle grease also freezes and is warmed with a blowtorch.

Supposedly, birds have frozen to death in mid flight due to the ferocious cold. And would you believe that the village’s school only closes if the temperature drops to below -52°?
