As much sand is moving on Mars today as some places on Earth.
Although it takes strong winds to blow the sand, once it's in motion, it bounces, dislodging other grains.
The discovery has implications for understanding why many Martian landscapes, including the landing site for NASA's Mars Science Laboratory, are so eroded.
