Anxiety (nervousness)

Anxiety is commonly displayed by nervousness, worry and increased apprehension. According to The National Institute of Mental Health, anxiety is a natural reaction to stress that nearly 19 million Americans suffer from. Though anxiety can be treated with medication, simple home remedies are available. Many at-home treatments include mixtures that need few, if any items.

Hot Herbal Tea

Drinking hot herbal tea can relieve tension and anxiety. Boil one cup water and add lavender, chamomile, cloves or thyme. Steep for five minutes. Do not let tea sit longer or it will get too bitter to drink. Remove herbs or teabag. Flavor tea with lemon, cream or honey.

Essential Oil Massage

Use several drops of lavender oil and mix with several tablespoons of almond oil. Stir well. Apply to your hands, legs and arms in a rubbing motion. Also apply it to your temples.

Practice Deep Breathing Excercises

Focus on inhaling and exhaling. Sit in a comfortable position and close your eyes. Relax and concentrate on the process of breathing. Inhale through nose slowly and exhale through mouth. Practice this exercise throughout the day when anxiety increases.

Hot Bath

Take a hot bath and add a cup of Epsom salt to water. This salt relieves muscle tension and aids in calming and relaxation. Do not use it if there is a diagnosis of kidney disease.

Workout on a Regular Basis

Working out releases serotonin, a natural chemical in the brain that increases mood levels and the feeling of well-being. Working out can include a daily walk with the dog to running several miles on a neighborhood trail. Or just get out there and start playing your favorite sport, or join an exercise class.
